Happy Halloween!

November 1st is All Saints’ Day, a famous and historic Christian feast day. Another name for All Saints’ Day is All Hallows’ Day, as “hallow” is an old word for “saint“. The evening before, the evening of 31st, is All Hallows’s Eve, or Hallowe’en. The custom of dressing up as witches or ghosts on that evening dates back to much older times, before Christianity.

What is Halloween?
People used to dress up on Halloween because in the old days winter was a scary time. They didn’t always have enough food and many people were afraid of the dark. They all believed that ghosts came back to earth on October 31st. So they were really scared of meeting a ghost if they went out.
To solve this problem people wore masks when they left their homes, so that the ghosts didn’t think they were one of them. People also placed a bowl of food outside their homes to please the ghosts and in the hope that they wouldn’t go into their homes.

  Are you in love?   Perhaps you are very shy and you don´t know how to express your feelings. Today we´re going to help you.

Tasks:

1. Choose a love poem to send to a loved person .

2. You can also choose one Limerick (corny, silly rhymes) and send your Valentine e-greeting.

3.- Sing Love songs and watch romantic movies. I´m going to watch again 

    

A Guy is singing his heart out on the streets of Dublin for tip money. One day a Czech Girl  stops to listen to the Guy play his music. She is very impressed by his songs and she asks if he wrote his own music. The Guy says that he writes and loves to play his own songs to himself even if the street crowd wants to hear other music. It is nice to earn tips, but that is not what his music is all about. The Guy lives at home and helps his father repair vacuum cleaners, but he has a dream of becoming a recording star. His girlfriend of many years has just left him and is now living in London. You can tell what this has done to his emotions, because it is being reflected in his new songs. The Girl  also has a musical background of playing the piano and writing songs. Their music brings them together and the Girl begins to help the Guy realize his dream. They begin to share their music and their feeling for each other. They put together a band with other street players and rent a recording studio for the weekend to record two demos. This could be the start of a new and wonderful life.

Save the Planet!

Just where do you start when you want “to save the planet”? An in which areas should you focus most of your efforts? Luckily, students in Pay Arias High School seem to be concerned and worried about environmental issues.

One of the greatest environmental problems is the careless and unnnecesary waste of water. We need to make our friends and family aware of the water shortage. Many famous pople are also investing their money and time on it. A good example is Leonardo DiCaprio and his ecosite.

His video WATER PLANET provides us a lot of information about water cycle.

1st Task  Watch and listen the video. Try to deduce the meaning  of the words that appear in it from context.

2nd Task  Listen again but reading the transcript made by Isabel Pérez by clicking on this link .Circle the words you don´t know and ask your teacher or the language assistant.

3rd Task    Work in pairs. Answer the following questions:

1.- How does water suppot life?

2.- Which are the main threats to water ?

3.- How has  Global Warming influenced water cycle?

4.- What are the main consequences of this situation?

5.- What can we do?

6.- What can governments do?

Del.icio.us es un servicio social que permite guardar los favoritos de tu navegador con todas las pautas que da el Web 2.0.

Una de las primeras cosas que echo de menos, cuando no estoy en mi ordenador,  son los enlaces que tengo guardados en los favoritos de ni navegador.

Para satisfacer esta necesidad surge la idea de del.icio.us, un popular servicio que permite almacenar nuestros  favoritos en Internet; con todas las ventajas de una red social para intercambiar información y encontrar otros enlaces relevantes.  La popularidad de este sistema ha sido tanta, que Yahoo adquirió este sistema hace algunas semanas, lo que nos asegurará que habrá muchas mejoras por venir.
